Some reflections on self-employment
1) We need each other. No one succeeds in isolation. If I’d insisted on going it alone, I would have sacked it off a long time ago. Community is the key to longevity, providing the support and motivation that allows me to play the long game. The real magic lies in reciprocity: give as much as you receive, or better yet, give freely. The rewards will come back to you in ways you won’t expect.
2) Follow your passions. It’s one of the greatest joys in life. Passion fuels creativity and sees you through the tough times. Things will inevitably change, and that’s not only okay but necessary. You don’t have to walk the same path forever – give yourself the freedom to evolve. What once set your soul on fire may not always do so, making changes will lead to exciting horizons.
3) Sleep, and don’t live on biscuits. Your body and brain are your most valuable resources. Remember, unless you outsource everything, you’re juggling multiple jobs to make a success of one. You need healthy energy and a sparky brain.
4) Ignore the naysayers. People who tell you your dream won’t work are miserable, jealous old buggers who are not to be listened to under any circumstances. Their negativity isn’t a reflection of your potential but of their limitations. Don’t let them derail your vision.
5) People will call you lucky. When they do, smile and know better. Perhaps they would like to join you as you lay awake at night wondering if the naysayers who tell you it will never work are right. Remember, luck often looks like grit and perseverance.
6) You’re better at running your business than you think. It’s easy to doubt yourself when things get tough. That said, you can always learn more, so make sure you do. Curiosity is the backbone of success—it keeps you ahead, fresh, and open to the endless opportunities for growth.
7) Your physical health matters. You’re not an old barn door. Move. Prioritize exercise, hydration, and stretching – whatever you can do. A happy body houses a happier mind.
8) Mental health requires attention, too. Just like your body, your mind needs you to move, but rest is equally crucial. Don’t sacrifice downtime in the name of productivity. It’s not big or clever, it’s just exhausting. Rest is a radical act. Be radical.
